can of worms
I can't ever fucking sleep. I also can't stop eating peanut butter. Chunky is for creeps.

I watched Kobashi/sasaki tonight, and i'm really getting a chip on my shoulder in regards to fans that try to dictate what's a good match based on selling or no selling. Christ, I hate even typing those words, since liking or disliking a match is so subjective. However, the chop battle between the two in my mind was nothing short of awesome. Do I really have to explain two of Japanese biggest stars, one on his home turf, and one still in the midst of an amazing comeback year not wanting to back down? It's hard for me to sit here and not totally freak out and say outlandish things like, "if you've never been in a ring, you have no right to critique", but once again, as fans, most have the right to speak their minds. It is america afterall, eh?
Chops are chops. Wrestling to me is about drama and story telling. Truthfully, what I didn't like about the match was the half-nelson suplexes. I can see an arguement for that, but chops? Holy hell, listen to me. I'm in need of sleep, and can't sleep, so i'm babbling about a match that took place on forgien soil.

Fuck it, I hate everybody that hated that match. I'm going to no sell your mother giving birth to you.
Minoru Suzuki is my hero, i'm going to steal his hair.
Up yours for being able to sleep.
hate hate hate

half-nelson suplexes are pro wrestling's greatest aspect.

That chop battle was amazing, and I don't see how you couldn't be entertained by it even if you saw it as nothing but two older Japanese men having a slap fight for 5 minutes straight.

I'm sad to admit I haven't experienced much Japanese wrestling other than garbage spectacle stuff, so didn't know what all the hullaballoo over this Kobashi guy coming over here in the fall was. That match was the first of his I have seen and I was instantly a fan.

Next time I see you, I will try to have made you some tapes from Brian's collection.

Man, moving out of the old apt. was like a divorce settlement between friends, on the wrestling tapes. and I still can't find all my AAA tapes, though that is completely unrelated.

I am so disappointed that you never got a chance to stop by the St. Louis area for a Gateway wrestling show before your walk down the Lonely Road Of Faith(tm) to Stamford, CT.

All the best.

If you dont follow puro but enjoyed that match, may I recommend a few other great ones to you?

Kenta Kobashi vs. Jun Akiyama from mid-2004 for the GHC Title.
Kenta Kobashi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa from March 2003 where Kobashi finally beats Misawa and wins the GHC.
Kenta Kobashi vs. Stan Hansen from 93 I believe. Hansen gives Kobashi WAY more than he needed to at the time and a classic ensues.
Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Tokeshiaki Kawada from the same show I believe. Awesome match to cap that LONG feud.
Kenta Kobashi vs. KENTA from the KENTA trial series. Ultimate battle of old vs. new.
Kenta Kobashi vs. Takeshi Rikio where Kobashi loses the GHC and puts over Rikio HUGE!

Those are a few great matches worked in a similar style. I'd recommend all of them personally and they come with high praise. And basically anything with Misawa, Kobashi, Kawada, or Taue in it is worth your while. ESPECIALLY with any combination of the four.

sXe Revolution is taking over.

Cheers.

I can't sleep either, so you can't hate on me right now. The funny thing is, when I mention wrestling to my friends they always think of Vinnie's boys, but to me, that's the entertainment aspect of it. Although I've only seen a very bad copied copy of this match, to me, it screamed wrestling. You got any other recommendations?? BTW, sometimes I think my mother would like to no-sell my birth too.

Insomnia is God's gift to wrestling fans. I've gotten through so much wrestling when I needed to be getting at least a handful of hours of sleep. The sad thing is I keep really bad boring wrestling on hand for when I DO have to eventually get to sleep

Chop battles are what makes life worth living, my friend. I can do without the half-nelsons, as well. Don't need to see someone land square on the neck or head just to have a good match.

There will always be those elitists who will trash a match for misexecuted spots. Sure, the suplexes didn't really fit into the match all that well, and their execution left much to be desired. The flow and story of the match was extraordinary, and completely overshadowed the few flaws the match had.

I don't think one can say for sure what is a good match and what isn't in wrestling. It's all subjective, and what some of us consider quality, some will consider a five-finger-stinker. But those of us who truly love the business that is wrestling will always appreciate hard work and storytelling, regardless of what the mob mentality is.

Nothing beats seeing Kobashi drop Chono on the head with his half-nelson suplexes seven times when chono had his neck injury, not to mention actually watching it live when that happened.

And yes, Suzuki's hairstyle is one of the coolest hairstyles I've ever seen thus far. Hehehe.

It's hard for me to sit here and not totally freak out and say outlandish things like, "if you've never been in a ring, you have no right to critique", but once again, as fans, most have the right to speak their minds.

...to an extent.

But I once sat in a RoH crowd in Bridgeport,CT where the "you fucked up!" chants were relentless, coming from 300-lb fanboys shoving multiple slices of pizza in their faces. And I kept thinking... who are they to be chanting that, when they probably couldn't even waddle down to the ring, much less attempt any of these moves? They were sitting there, like they had Ric Flair's legacy to back up their righteous chants, and that got old.

*claps* totally agreed on that... these are the guys who don't have the guts or the ability to get in there themselves, so they resort to being "smarky" (which is just another type of smarm) to make themselves feel better about their own inadequacies.

i HATE "you fucked up" chants... they really began bothering me once i got to know some of the guys in our territory, and myself and my best friend would sit there in shock and fright if one of them was put into a potentially dangerous situation, or missed a spot badly... because there's always the chance of them getting hurt. and i think a lot of the marks forget that. or they've been so blinded by bloodlust that they don't even know what sympathy is anymore.

I find that most of the people who have bashed this match don't understand puro, and to a greater extent.....wrestling. Was a technical wonder? 50 years ahead of it's time? It's debatable, but I'm going with no.

However the match was dramatic as hell. I perosnally thought the match was unreal. The chop battle had be jumping out of my chair (marking out). I've never seen anything like that before. I relate it to the time AmDrag spun Homicide around in an airplane spin for a good 3 minutes. Except Homicide's chest wasn't severely bruised and bleeding.

Might I also add that Misawa and Kawada can still go, and KENTA is my favorite wrestler now, all thanks to that show.

And that is why Shinya Hashimoto's quote always stuck with me. How to paraphrase this, because I don't remember exactly word for word how it went.

When asking a bunch of students training to become pro wrestlers, he asked them what they thought the most important aspect of wrestling was. After they had all said things like selling, psychology, ect. Hashimoto just said one thing, the fire!

Always stuck with me, and always amazed when some little mistake, selling inaccuracy, whatever is enough for people to bitch, moan, and complain relentlessly about what was a great match. One which they have now deprived themself of, just to look "smart".

Well, this is like 3 months late, but I saw that match a week or two ago, and it was awesome. I stopped arguing with wrestling fanboys on the Internet back in college...not worth it, and if they can't grasp the awesomeness of Kenta Kobashi, then fuck 'em, it's their loss.

I didn't mind the half-nelsons...they were channeling the old All Japan style, I think. Hot finish featuring a bunch of no/half-selling of head-impact suplexes, until one of them finally drops.
